Life is precious and the lives of those we love are extremely important to us. This is the reason why tragic and sudden deaths can be extremely difficult to handle and overcome. Unfortunately, our lives can change in a matter of minutes and even seconds, and that is what happened to Olympic skier Bode Miller. His infant daughter, 2-year old Emeline Miller, died after she fell into a friend’s swimming pool.
Bode Miller is an accomplished world-class athlete that has won 33 world cups for the US. He also managed to get six Olympic medals as a skier and this career has given him recognition all over the country and all around the globe. We mention this because people have the perception that those who succeed are not usually going to find themselves dealing with tragedy, but it can happen to anyone.
While visiting friends, Emeline managed to sneak away from her mother for a minute and she walked to their pool area. Unfortunately, the friend’s pool had no fence installed and she fell in the pool. They found her as she was drowning, but she died the next day even with medical care being provided. Everything happened too fast and she was in the water long enough for the damage to be irreversible.
It’s tragic that she would likely be alive right now if the friends had a fence and self-locking gates for their pool. This is not to say that the friendss are to blame for this tragedy, but a life could have been saved by this precaution. Everyone who owns a pool needs to install a fence around it. Even if they have no children or pets of their own, there is always the danger of neighbor children wandering around and falling in the pool.
All children deserve to be safe and any pools that can be accessed in open areas need to be fenced. Life is extremely fragile for infants because they are not aware of the dangers they find in their way. Emeline Miller is the perfect example of a tragedy that could have been avoided with an affordable solution. A solution that anyone who is able to afford a pool should also be able to afford easily.
Please… if you have a swimming pool, think of it just like your automobile. You would never own an auto without having seatbelts. So, never own a swimming pool without having a secured fence surrounding it.
